Communities should allow individuals and families to realize their potential and take full advantage of life’s opportunities. Communities should also help us deal successfully with life’s challenges. This means that a Community’s systems of education, health and support must be accessible and effective.
For many individuals and families, the systems in our community are not working good enough. Here are some statistics:
- 90% of all substance abuse is diagnosed during a person’s teen’s years
- Overdose is the #1 cause of death for young people, surpassing car accidents
- Our recidivism rate is 70%, which means that 7 of 10 people in our justice system become stuck there
- The majority of individuals in our jails and prisons have learning differences, substance abuse and/or mental health problems
Our education, behavioral health and justice systems must do a better job. Our task is to understand the problems and implement strategies that work.
If you are aware of a problem or strategy in your community, please let us know. Together was can learn about the issues and take action.
Community should help us deal successfully with life’s challenges. Crisis, weakness, sickness and bad choices will happen. Community systems of support must be accessible and effective when it does.
